PROJECT: Barozzi Veiga – Ribera del Duero

LOCATION: Roa, Spain

YEAR: 2008

ARCHITECT / FIRM: Barozzi Veiga

BUYER: Consejo Regulador Ribera del Duero

SURFACE: 4.147 sqm

PRICE: € 5.701.936

DESCRIPTION:

WHAT - Program

PREVALENT REPLACEMENT / DISCONTINUITY: The functional program is predominantly a new program.

DESCRIPTION:
The building, which accommodates the Regulatory Council for Ribera del Duero wines, contains offices, reception areas and a small auditorium. All of these spaces form a construction that fundamentally revolves around the notion of public space.

WHO - Financing

PREVALENT REPLACEMENT / DISCONTINUITY: Financing for a minor part made by the original owner, mostly from another investor.

DESCRIPTION:
The main investor has been ITACYL, while the rest of the costs has been covered by the client.

HOW MUCH - Absolute Dimensions

- SURFACE present EXTENSION,

PREVALENT REPLACEMENT / DISCONTINUITY: The overall dimensions are about three times the pre- existing surface.

- VOLUME present EXTENSION,

PREVALENT CONSERVATION / CONTINUITY: The overall dimensions increase moderately with respect to the pre-existing volume.

DESCRIPTION:
The aim of the project was to redesign an existing building and to extend it in order to accommodate the headquarter “Ribera del Duero”.

HOW MUCH - Relative Dimensions

PREVALENT REPLACEMENT / DISCONTINUITY: The new spaces are prevalent with respect to the pre-existing spaces.

DESCRIPTION:
With regard to the town, the design is attentive and works on a small scale, suturing and recomposing the urban tissue by modelling volumes whose premise is to construct a public square. Concerning the landscape, there is a shift in scale and attitude, represented by the tower. This archetypical architectural element, which is linked to the local historical memory, establishes a relationship with the Castilian plateau.

HOW - Design Strategy STRUCTURE

PREVALENT REPLACEMENT / DISCONTINUITY: The supporting structure is predominantly a new structure.

DESCRIPTION:
The fundamental attribute of the design resides in the boundary area where the building is set, next to the old walls of Roa de Duero and on the edge of the town, between artifice and nature, between the urban fabric and the landscape.

HOW - Design Strategy MATERIAL

BALANCE BETWEEN CONSERVATION AND REPLACEMENT: The materials chosen for the new intervention balance similarities and differences with the existing ones.

DESCRIPTION:
Blocks of local stone materialize this design in Roa, presenting it as a massive element of gravity. This reinforces the idea of a building which, far from having a limited lifespan, has been constructed with a material that mutates and changes with the passing of time.

HOW - Design Strategy IMAGE

BALANCE BETWEEN CONSERVATION AND REPLACEMENT: The new intervention balances elements of continuity and discontinuity with respect to existing structures.

DESCRIPTION:
The relationship between the building and the historical traces of the place reveals a reality that explains the specificity of the context and enhances its value. Thus a new reality is the outcome of improbable and unexpected factors.
